Man Being Held In Worman's Death

BENTON, ILL., March -- (U.P.) -- Clyde Brown, 30, Ruckner chief of police, was held in Franklin county jail today charged with the murder of Mary Pasternock, 38-year-old Buckner tavern waitress.

Brown has denied the charge, police said. The evidence against the police chief has not been disclosed by the sheriff's office.

Miss Pasternock's body was found Thursday by a hitch hiker near Route 144. She had been shot twice, through the right chest and right shoulder, her arm was bruised and her clothing torn and blood smeared.

Footprints and tire tracks found near the body were believe to have contributed evidence as to the identity of the man who accompanied Miss Pasternock when she left the tavern where she worked late Wednesday night.

Police have refused to disclose whether Brown is the man who left the tavern with Miss Pasternock.
